BMW iX4 (NA7) 2027: specs, power and release date of the electric X4 successor

BMW has sent pre-production prototypes of the electric iX4 crossover out on the road. The car was caught by spy photographers while driving through the streets of Munich.

The model takes over from the combustion-engined X4 and becomes a fully electric heir to that name — we have already reported that series production of the iX4 begins in November 2026. In the brand hierarchy the newcomer lines up next to the iX3 crossover but wears a far bolder coupe-like silhouette, widening the portfolio built on the Neue Klasse architecture. Assembly is being set up at the company’s plant in the Hungarian city of Debrecen under the internal code NA7.

Despite the heavy camouflage the profile is easy to read: the rear of the body carries the falling contour typical of the Sports Activity Coupe class. The front end will most likely inherit the styling of the already unveiled iX3, but with unique bumpers to keep the two models visually apart.

The technical base of the iX4 is shared with the rest of the electric line-up. Two versions are expected at launch. The range-topping 50 xDrive gets two electric motors with a combined 469 hp (345 kW) and 645 Nm of torque. The second variant is the more affordable 40 xDrive: unlike the iX3, the coupe-SUV is not expected to offer a rear-wheel-drive option from the start.

The newcomer also gets the central computing unit called “Heart of Joy”, which brings drive, braking and recuperation together — it already debuted on the iX3. The official premiere of the production BMW iX4 is expected in the autumn of 2026, and the car will reach the market as a 2027 model. Earlier the company opened orders for the electric i3 sedan several months ahead of plan because demand ran hot, while the iX3 in Europe is closing in on 100,000 orders.
