Least reliable Toyota years: which Camry, Corolla, Tundra and RAV4 to avoid buying used

A Toyota badge does not remove the need to check the exact model year and the VIN. Money Digest has drawn up a list of ten problem cars from the brand, cross-referencing NHTSA recall campaigns, complaints from American owners and rough repair costs. It cannot be read as a full reliability ranking, though: a recall records a safety risk, not how often a given car actually breaks down.

The list covers the 2000 Toyota Tundra, the 2001 Camry Solara, the 2002 and 2007 Camry, the 2004 Sienna, the 2005 and 2009 Corolla, the 2006 Tacoma, plus the 2007 RAV4 and Prius. The heaviest criticism concerns frame and suspension corrosion, excessive oil consumption, the risk of unintended acceleration, and faults in the steering, the wiring and the airbags.

On the early Tundra and Tacoma, rust in the load-bearing structure is the real danger. On pickups used in regions that salt their roads, corrosion could reach the frame, the cross members and the mounting points of major components. A cosmetically clean body says nothing about the state of such a truck: putting it on a lift and looking underneath matters more here than measuring paint thickness.

The 2007 Camry and the related RAV4 of the same period are known not only for their American recalls but also for oil consumption complaints on some 2AZ-FE engines. One of those units was later torn down after 491,000 km, and what the teardown found inside that Camry was not what anyone expected: the wear was concentrated in the piston group and the coked rings, while the crankshaft and the cylinder head had survived comparatively well.

The 2005 and 2009 Corolla owe their place largely to Takata airbags and the campaigns tied to them. That is an important qualifier: a single supplier defect could spawn several recalls and reach dozens of brands, so simply adding up campaigns distorts a model’s comparative reliability. NHTSA still advises checking Toyotas from certain years by VIN, because some cars remain unrepaired.

On the 2004 Sienna, the attention goes to the steering, the shift lever lock and the risk of the floor covering trapping the pedal. On the 2007 Prius, what matters is the condition of the electric coolant pump and the steering shaft. The 2001 Camry Solara stands out differently: no marketwide recalls are listed for it, and its place on the list rests mainly on owner complaints about the brakes, oil consumption, visibility and paint quality.

Money Digest quotes high repair prices, but applying them to every car is misleading: part of the defects on the list are covered by a recall campaign. One qualifier matters here. The campaign itself never expires and stays open until the car is repaired, but the law guarantees a free fix only if fewer than 15 years passed between the first sale of the car and the recall notice. For cars built from 2000 to 2009 that rule does not always apply, yet Toyota replaces Takata airbags free of charge on vehicles built from 2002 to 2017 regardless of age. An open campaign should be checked against the specific VIN in any case.

For a car imported from another market, checking the model year alone is not enough. North American and European versions can differ in engines, airbags, wiring and the list of campaigns that apply. Beyond a VIN report you will want an oil consumption check, an inspection of the frame and suspension, a look at the airbag warning light and confirmation that past repairs were actually carried out.

This list works less as a ban on buying and more as a set of checkpoints. A well-kept Camry with its oil appetite fixed and its recalls closed can be safer than a car from a better year that arrives with no service history.
