Hyundai Tucson Prototype Fire: What Happened During Alpine Testing

Two blown front tires and fire extinguishers around a new Hyundai Tucson look like an alarming sign, but for now they only point to a brutal test of a prototype. According to the photographer, the crossover was towing a trailer on mountain roads in the Austrian Alps when the front brakes overheated. One unit began smoking and caught fire, and the accumulated heat destroyed both tires one after another.

This episode can’t be extended to future production Tucson models. Hyundai hasn’t announced a defect and hasn’t commented on the cause. Trailer testing on long descents is designed to push the vehicle to its limit, exposing cooling, component, or electronics-tuning problems before the assembly line.

The incident also gave a closer look at the car. The next Tucson will get a more upright body with design cues from the Santa Fe, a large horizontal display, and physical buttons for frequently used functions. Hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions are expected, though the final lineup hasn’t been revealed yet.

Hyundai has already unveiled a new 1.6-liter hybrid family with two electric motors, 380 Nm of torque, and an efficiency gain of more than 4%. What matters for the future car isn’t the fire during testing itself, but the engineers’ conclusions. If the episode leads to changes in cooling or calibration before production starts, the failed test will have done its job.
