Nissan Terrano PHEV 2027: production timeline, specs and export plans

Nissan confirmed a production Terrano PHEV is coming within a year after unveiling the concept in Beijing. Export markets are planned, but a Pajero platform link looks unlikely.

The Nissan Terrano name is genuinely coming back — and this time it’s not a rendering or a rumor. Nissan unveiled the Terrano PHEV Concept on April 24 at the Beijing auto show and officially confirmed that a production version will follow within a year. That means, barring a schedule change, the production SUV should be revealed no later than spring 2027.

The concept is built as a plug-in hybrid aimed at both off-road capability and everyday city driving. Nissan hasn’t disclosed exact powertrain specifications yet. That’s why the figures floating around — roughly 429 hp and 800 Nm — shouldn’t be treated as confirmed numbers for the future Terrano: those figures come from the Frontier Pro PHEV and are only being used as a rough benchmark in third-party coverage.

There’s a more important confirmed detail here. The Terrano won’t stay a China-only model. Nissan has said outright that it plans to export the production version, using China as one of its hubs for developing and supplying new electrified vehicles. Specific export markets for the Terrano haven’t been named yet. As for the popular theory that the new Terrano will be a technical twin of the Mitsubishi Pajero, that looks shaky.

Mitsubishi has already officially revealed the architecture of the new Pajero, which we covered earlier, set for its world premiere in fall 2026: the SUV rides on a rugged ladder-frame chassis borrowed from the Triton pickup, with a body and suspension developed specifically for it. That runs counter to the idea of a simple joint project between Nissan and Mitsubishi. Nissan hasn’t said the Terrano will use the Pajero or Triton platform.

So the real intrigue around the new Terrano isn’t the comeback of the name itself — that part is already official. What’s still unknown is the far more practical question: exactly which PHEV setup Nissan will put into the production car, and how serious an off-roader it will turn out to be next to the body-on-frame Pajero.

Nissan’s chief has previously said he’d like to bring back the Silvia, though there’s no project yet.
