Volkswagen Golf eTSI R-Line Premium Sound Edition 2026: Price, Specs and Harman Kardon Audio

Volkswagen is asking ¥4,999,000 for the new Golf eTSI R-Line Premium Sound Edition in Japan — 380,000 yen more than a regular R-Line. Only 500 of these hatchbacks will be built for the Japanese market, and the premium here doesn’t just buy a stereo — the automaker launched matching special editions for the T-Cross, Golf Variant and Passat at the same time. Sales started on August 4, 2026.

The headline feature is a 480-watt Harman Kardon system with a 12-channel amplifier and nine speakers. The special edition also gets 18-inch York wheels and black exterior trim on the mirror housings, headlight surrounds, grille and rear badge. The equipment list separately calls out matrix IQ.LIGHT headlights, the Area View 360-degree camera, a head-up display and the standard Discover navigation system.

Mechanically it carries over from the eTSI R-Line. Under the hood is a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder making 150 hp and 250 Nm, assisted by a 48-volt system with a 19-hp electric motor. The gearbox is a seven-speed DSG. Japan’s WLTC fuel economy figure is 18.7 km/l, which works out to roughly 5.35 L/100 km.

Size-wise, the Golf remains relatively compact: 4,295 mm long, 1,790 mm wide and 1,475 mm tall on a 2,620 mm wheelbase. The Toyota Corolla Sport, cited by the Japanese outlet, is 80 mm longer, though the two cars share the same width.

Colors are limited too: Dolphin Grey Metallic and Oryx White Mother of Pearl Effect, with the white finish costing an extra ¥110,000. In the end, the edition is really about the whole package: an 8% premium over R-Line buys not just a beefier sound system but several pricey options that are sold separately on the regular Golf.
