VW ID. California Cruise 2026: electric camper concept, weight, and release plans

Volkswagen is reviving the idea of an electric California, a concept the brand had written off for years as too heavy and too niche. At the Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf, the company will unveil the ID. California Cruise — the first fully electric member of the California family, built on the ID. Buzz platform. But it’s far too early to call it a production-ready model.

Volkswagen hasn’t named the battery, output, range, or even a sales date for the Cruise yet. The company frames it as the foundation for an entire future family of electric campers. The premiere lands at the show that opens on August 28.

The second debut looks far less flashy, but tackles one of camper vans’ biggest problems: weight. Together with Stuff Bubble, Volkswagen developed a removable inflatable kitchen weighing under 10 kg and a flexible bed measuring roughly 200x134 cm for the California Beach. The single-bed configuration weighs about 6 kg, the double about 12 kg.

Weight remains the most interesting part of the electric camper story. The bed, kitchen, water, and extra gear inevitably cut into payload and range. So the real headline figure for the ID. California Cruise won’t come from a design sketch — it’ll come when Volkswagen names the finished vehicle’s weight, its battery, and a real-world WLTP number.
