BMW 220 Gran Coupe original 2026: Japan price and equipment

BMW has lowered the entry point into the 2 Series Gran Coupe lineup on the Japanese market. The new 220 Gran Coupe original costs 4.98 million yen. For comparison, the 220 Gran Coupe M Sport is currently priced at 5.36 million yen. That's a saving of 380,000 yen, or roughly 7.1%. The first cars are expected to reach customers starting in September.

BMW didn't cut costs on the powertrain. The original keeps the 220 Gran Coupe's 48-volt mild-hybrid system. In Japanese specification, it pairs a 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbo engine with an integrated electric motor: combined output is 125 kW, or about 170 hp, with 280 Nm of peak torque. The transmission is a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic.

Some of the pricier electronics stayed too. BMW lists navigation, the Driving Assist package, Digital Key Plus, and the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. Driving Assist on the current 2 Series includes adaptive cruise control with Stop&Go, lane departure and lane-keeping warnings, a collision-avoidance system, and cross-traffic alert.

There's an important unknown, though. The automaker says it “carefully selected” standard equipment to hit the lower price, but the release doesn't list which specific M Sport items were dropped. So it can't automatically be assumed that the original is simply the same car without the sportier trim — an updated Japanese equipment list would be needed for an exact comparison.

The approach itself isn't new for BMW Japan. Under the original badge, the brand offers more affordable versions of several models, keeping the key technology while trimming some standard equipment. For the 2 Series Gran Coupe, the gap to M Sport works out to a noticeable amount if the missing options aren't ones a buyer actually needs.
