Subaru Levorg Layback 2026: why S:HEV is listed as a wagon

The same Subaru Levorg Layback has unexpectedly ended up in two different categories. On Subaru’s Japanese website, the gasoline version with 200 mm of ground clearance is listed as an SUV, while the new S:HEV, with 180 mm under the body, is already classified as a wagon.

The hybrid was introduced on July 2, 2026. Subaru reduced its ground clearance and overall height by 20 mm, to 180 and 1550 mm respectively. The company links the change to easier urban use and chassis tuning. The car still retains X-MODE and Symmetrical AWD, so the lower clearance alone does not mean it has lost its ability to cope away from paved roads.

Subaru’s Japanese dealer network explains the unusual split directly: within the brand, one of the internal SUV criteria is ground clearance of at least 200 mm. That is why the regular Layback remains an SUV while the visually almost identical S:HEV appears in the wagon section. Subaru itself still describes the hybrid in its official release as a crossover with SUV practicality, so this is more about internal catalog structure than a fundamentally different vehicle type.

In Japan, the 1.8-liter Layback starts at 4,059,000 yen, while the S:HEV starts at 4,246,000 yen. The 20 mm difference therefore changes how Subaru positions the car in its catalog more than it changes the Layback’s basic all-weather character.
