smart #2 2026: dimensions, range, battery and premiere date

With just over a month to go before the world premiere of the smart #2, scheduled for October 12, 2026 in Paris, cars with the production body have already appeared on the streets of Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen. This looks more like a controlled preview than classic “spy” photography: smart China itself distributed images of the cars in branded camouflage.

The styling is no longer much of a mystery — the dimensions are more interesting. China’s MIIT certification lists two lengths, 2751 and 2764 mm, with a width of 1669 mm and a height of 1555 mm. The wheelbase is 1875 mm and curb weight is 1130 kg. For comparison, the Concept #2 shown in spring measured 2792 mm long, so the production car is another 28–41 mm shorter.

The electric motor produces 60 kW, or about 82 PS, and top speed is 140 km/h. These figures had already emerged when Chinese certification first revealed the production smart #2 specifications, along with the use of CATL LFP cells.

There is an important caveat regarding the battery. Some media reports present a 35.7 kWh capacity and roughly 300 km WLTP as if they were final vehicle specifications, but smart currently describes them as target figures. The same applies to a 10–80% fast-charge time of less than 20 minutes: European homologation is still under way, so the final numbers may change.

Another standout figure is the turning circle: just 6.95 m. The new ECA architecture was developed specifically for ultra-compact electric cars, while the #2’s design is led by the Mercedes-Benz team. In format, the car takes smart almost back to the original Fortwo idea: two doors, two seats and wheels pushed as far toward the corners of the body as possible.

A few days before this public appearance, smart also confirmed a seven-speaker Sennheiser audio system for selected #2 trims. But the Paris premiere is expected to fill the biggest remaining gaps — final range, charging figures, trim levels and prices.

This stage is therefore significant not because of a new battery or motor — those details are already known — but because it shows the smart #2 has effectively reached production form. After the concept, test prototypes and certification, the car is now in public view only weeks before its official debut.
