Honda FIA Road Safety Index 2026: why it received five stars

Honda has become the first organization in the world to receive the maximum five-star rating in the updated FIA Road Safety Index. The rating was awarded in the products and services category, and the achievement was recognized at the Monza circuit during the Italian Grand Prix. This is not a crash-test score for a specific model, but an assessment of how the company as a whole manages road-safety risks.

In 2026, the FIA expanded the Road Safety Index scale from three to five stars. Alongside the existing criteria covering a company’s commitments and its impact on road safety, the assessment now also considers planning, performance monitoring and the management of safety culture, including the influence of products, services and the supply chain.

For the new assessment, Honda expanded the scope from Japan to 17 countries. These markets account for more than 90% of the brand’s global car and motorcycle sales. The FIA also highlighted Honda’s long-term targets, safety-management system, performance monitoring and introduction of new technologies.

A year earlier, Honda had already become the first manufacturer of cars and motorcycles to earn the previous maximum three-star FIA Road Safety Index rating. At that time, the assessment covered the company’s activities in Japan. The new five-star system raised the requirements, while Honda also expanded the geographic scope to 17 countries.

Honda aims to halve by 2030 the number of fatalities in crashes involving its cars and motorcycles per 10,000 vehicles sold compared with the 2020 level. Its next stated target is zero fatalities in such crashes by 2050.

A five-star result does not mean that every Honda is automatically safer than rival vehicles in a crash: separate tests by Euro NCAP, IIHS and other organizations are designed for that. Here, the FIA evaluates not a single vehicle but the manufacturer’s overall road-safety management system.
