Fiat Topolino Top. J: four-seat layout, dimensions and L6e homologation

Designers managed to fit four people into a project based on the Fiat Topolino, a car just 2.53 meters long. Fabrizio Giugiaro and Lapo Elkann unveiled the Top. J at the Turin motor show — an unusual interpretation of the electric Fiat Topolino in which four occupants sit back to back. Turning that layout into a production Topolino, however, would be harder than it looks.

GFG Style officially describes the Top. J and the open two-seat Top. L as one-off design projects. The Top. J has no conventional roof; instead, it uses a fabric canopy, while its blue-green livery references Gianni Agnelli’s Ferrari 166 MM.

“The two cars are very different, but they share the same spirit: they are free, bold and authentic,” Lapo Elkann explained. Fabrizio Giugiaro added that he wanted to see “how far you can go” with the small and simple Topolino as a starting point.

The four seats are what make the Top. J particularly interesting from a technical standpoint. The production Fiat Topolino is an L6e electric light quadricycle with two seats, a top speed of 45 km/h, a 5.4 kWh battery and a range of up to 75 km. It is 2535 mm long.

European rules for the L6e category, however, explicitly limit the number of seats to two, including the driver. That means the four-seat Top. J, in the form shown, cannot receive the same homologation as the regular Topolino. A road-going production version would require a different classification and compliance with the corresponding requirements — and GFG Style has announced no such plans.

The second car, the Top. L, goes in the opposite direction: two seats, a fully open body and as few extra elements as possible. Both projects remain design exercises for now, so it is premature to treat the Top. J as a preview of a future four-seat Fiat.
