Tesla Grok text messaging: how the new Assistant feature will work

A new Grok capability has appeared in Tesla's owner's manual: in Assistant mode, drivers will be able to ask the AI in ordinary conversational language to send a text message to a contact or a specific phone number. Messaging itself is not new to Tesla cars — the built-in system can already send messages through a smartphone connected by Bluetooth. The change is the use of conversational AI instead of a rigid voice command.

In Tesla's current documentation, sending text messages is explicitly included in the list of Assistant mode capabilities. Alongside navigation, phone calls and media controls, the manual says Grok can be asked to message a contact or a specific number. The wording already appears in the manuals for the Model Y and Model 3.

There is an important limitation, however. Not a Tesla App, the specialist outlet that highlighted the manual change, reports that the capability is not actually enabled in cars yet. Tesla could activate it server-side or through another OTA update, but the company has not announced a timetable.

The difference from the older system is mainly in how drivers interact with it. Tesla already supports sending messages through a connected phone and voice input, while Grok is designed to understand natural speech and context — for example, identifying the recipient and composing a short message without requiring a memorized command.

This continues the rapid expansion of Grok's role in Tesla vehicles. A summer update gave the assistant access to phone calls, media, climate controls and selected vehicle settings. Grok has also become available on compatible Teslas in additional regions, including Japan.

Grok remains a beta feature, and availability depends on vehicle configuration and market. Premium Connectivity or Wi-Fi is required, while vehicle-control commands are available specifically in Assistant mode.

The new capability fits a broader shift across the auto industry from dozens of fixed voice phrases to conversational AI assistants that can understand context and a driver's natural speech.
