Volvo XC60 and XC90 2026: plug-in hybrid electric range and key updates

Volvo has sharply extended the electric range of the XC60 and XC90 plug-in hybrids to a preliminary 200 km and 160 km WLTP, while keeping a petrol engine for longer trips.

200 km for the XC60 and 160 km for the XC90 — Volvo has radically increased the electric-only range of two of its key plug-in hybrids. The company says the new versions can travel more than 2.5 times farther on battery power than the previous PHEVs. The figures are preliminary and based on the WLTP cycle, according to Volvo representatives.

The main technical change is a larger battery, now integrated into the floor, plus a more powerful electric motor. The petrol engine remains and joins in on longer trips. Volvo has not yet disclosed the battery capacity for these versions, the output of the new powertrains or charging speed, so it is not yet possible to compare weight and replenishment times with the outgoing models.

The XC60 receives a much broader update. The grille, bumpers, bonnet, front wings, wheels, tailgate and lamps have been revised, while redesigned Matrix LED headlights retain the brand's Thor’s Hammer signature. Inside, there is a new dashboard, new door panels and an 11.2-inch display with Volvo Car UX. Google Gemini handles voice interaction.

The suite of electronic driver aids has also been reworked. New radars, cameras and other sensors support automatic emergency braking and steering assistance, lane-change assistance, a 360-degree camera view and a door-opening warning for approaching cyclists.

A larger battery addresses one of the fundamental weaknesses of PHEVs only if the car is charged regularly. A recent analysis of real-world data from 220,000 plug-in hybrids showed how sharply actual emissions can diverge from laboratory figures when owners frequently rely on the combustion engine.

At the same time, Volvo keeps a fully electric alternative in the range: the EX60 has already started reaching customers in Europe and offers up to 810 km of WLTP range. That makes the new XC60 a middle ground for buyers who want to cover everyday journeys without petrol but still find a complete break with the combustion engine inconvenient on long trips.

Orders for the new XC60 and XC90, including Black Edition versions, are already open in selected European and American markets. Production starts later in autumn 2026. Volvo has not yet announced prices. Both SUVs will also continue to be offered as mild hybrids.
