Next Peugeot 308: possible fastback body and STLA One platform

Peugeot is studying a raised 4.4 m fastback as one option to replace the 308. Stellantis has confirmed three new C-segment Peugeots on STLA One from 2029.

Peugeot could abandon the familiar 308 format in the next generation. One option under study is a raised fastback about 4.4 m long, conceived as a more compact alternative in spirit to today’s 408. No production decision has been made yet.

That distinction separates planning from a finished car. According to Auto Express, Peugeot is considering several body-style scenarios for its future C-segment family. Brand CEO Alain Favey has confirmed that the company does not intend simply to repeat the current 308, 308 SW and 408 in the next generation and is looking at different formats for their successors.

One option for the 308 successor would sit between a conventional hatchback and an SUV. The Peugeot 408 is the reference point, but the projected length is about 4.4 m versus almost 4.7 m for the 408. A longer rear overhang would help preserve useful cargo space under a sloping roofline. For now, these are project targets rather than an approved specification. Auto Express also expects major changes to the electric version, but Peugeot has not confirmed a specific driving range.

The production side is already official. Stellantis has confirmed three all-new Peugeot C-segment models on the modular STLA One platform. They will use electric or hybrid powertrains, with production at the Mulhouse plant due to begin from 2029.

The projects form part of Peugeot’s announced model-range renewal through 2030. The brand plans to introduce seven new models, while STLA One will underpin several future Peugeot vehicles in the B and C segments.

For now, it is more accurate to describe Peugeot 308 Fastback as a possible development direction rather than a finished model. Peugeot has confirmed the replacement of its current C-segment line-up and the move to a new architecture, while the body style, dimensions and name of the specific successor may still change. The next key step will be the unveiling of one of the three C-segment projects or official confirmation that the 308 name will continue into the new generation.
