Chery reliability in J.D. Power 2026: 181 PP100 and Tiggo segment wins

Chery ranked first among Chinese domestic brands in the 2026 J.D. Power dependability study with 181 problems per 100 vehicles. The average for domestic brands was 201 PP100, meaning Chery recorded 20 fewer problems per 100 vehicles. The result is relevant to Tiggo owners outside China, but it should not be treated as proof that every Chery sold in other markets is equally dependable.

The China Vehicle Dependability Study measures problems owners experienced during the previous six months. It surveyed 11 119 owners of vehicles aged 13 to 48 months that were purchased from January 2022 through March 2025. The study covered 109 models from 34 brands across 81 cities in China. A lower PP100 score is better.

Chery scored 181 PP100, compared with 186 for both FAW Hongqi and GAC Trumpchi. The Tiggo 7/7 Plus and Tiggo 8 Pro also ranked first in their respective segments. Chery's score improved from 188 to 181 PP100 in one year.

The limits of the study matter as much as the ranking itself. In this VDS, J.D. Power evaluates only internal-combustion vehicles operated in China. Trim levels, engines, software and operating conditions for Chinese-market Tiggo models can differ from vehicles sold elsewhere.

Another result is equally revealing. Chinese domestic brands averaged 201 PP100, international mass-market brands averaged 191, and the overall market averaged 192. Over five years, the share of problems involving powertrains fell to 6%, while infotainment now accounts for 15.9% of problems. Chery's first place therefore reflects a strong result in this specific Chinese sample, but it does not remove the need to check electronics, service history and the exact vehicle version when buying used.
