Automotive outlet Carbuzz has compiled a ranking of the most durable German cars, capable of covering 480,000 kilometers without major breakdowns when properly maintained. The list spans eight models released from the 1980s through the early 2010s, selected for their build quality and mechanical robustness.

Rounding out the list is the BMW M5 E39 (1998-2003), a sports sedan seen as a final link to a time when German cars prized simplicity and toughness, and it still carries that no-nonsense character.

Close behind is the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class AMG R129 (1989-2001) with its legendary naturally aspirated 7.3-liter V12, which is still regarded as one of the brand’s most reliable engines.

The Volkswagen Golf V (2004-2009) equipped with the 3.2-liter V6 also earns a place for its resistance to wear and steady performance.

Among the sports entries, the BMW M3 E46 (2000-2006) and Porsche Boxster S 987 (2004-2012) are highlighted for blending sharp dynamics with long-term durability.

The top three includes the Porsche 911 Carrera 997 (2005-2012) and the second-generation Audi TT (2008-2015), while the overall winner is the Mercedes-Benz E-Class W124 (1984-1995). Experts describe it as a benchmark of engineering for its time and recognize it as the most reliable German car of recent decades.

The ranking underscores that longevity ultimately comes down to care: with timely servicing, many of these cars can remain with their owners for decades, standing as examples of quality and dependability. That caveat matters—neglect will dull even the toughest reputations.
