As 2025 drew to a close, Elon Musk said the Tesla Model Y had once again become the world’s best-selling car for the third consecutive year. The claim was made in a social media post and pointed to Tesla’s own materials.

There is an important caveat: full confirmation typically rests on final consolidated figures across global markets, and at the time of the statement those figures had not yet been published. That is why a number of industry observers questioned calling the result official, noting that in 2024 Model Y’s lead was not clear-cut and depended on methodology and market coverage.

Even so, it is hard to argue with the strength of Model Y’s 2025 sales. The car remains one of the segment’s main movers thanks to a blend of practicality, performance, and a well-developed ecosystem—an equation that still resonates.

Another factor in 2025 was the retooling of production lines for an updated Model Y. That may have caused early-year production dips, yet demand, judging by the company’s own messaging, held steady.
