Consumer Reports 2026 Top Picks: The most reliable and safe vehicles

Consumer Reports has released its updated 2026 Top Picks list, a ranking of vehicles the organization deems most reliable, safe, and successful from an operational standpoint. The methodology remains consistent: in-house testing at its proving grounds, evaluations for fuel economy, road behavior, and functionality, plus data from a large annual owner survey—this year involving around 380,000 vehicles. Ultimately, SPEEDME journalists selected the picks, which CR calls the best starting point for any buyer.

The SUV segment predictably dominates. The list includes the Subaru Crosstrek and Forester, as well as the Toyota Grand Highlander—models praised for high reliability and family comfort. Among premium SUVs, the Lexus NX and BMW X5 stand out for combining rich features with stable test results.

In the sedan category, Consumer Reports experts favored the Honda Civic and Toyota Camry. Both cars demonstrate excellent fuel efficiency, predictable operation, and high owner satisfaction.

In the pickup segment, the top choice is the Ford Maverick—a compact, practical truck that earned high marks for everyday usability. For the first time in many years, the full-size Ford F-150 also made the list, scoring sufficiently well on key parameters including safety.

Consumer Reports named the Tesla Model Y the best electric vehicle, highlighting its blend of power, range, and technological sophistication. Importantly, all ten category leaders are now available either as hybrids or fully electric versions, reflecting a market shift toward electrification.

All models in the ranking come equipped with modern safety systems, including automatic high-speed braking and pedestrian detection—requirements without which Consumer Reports no longer considers a vehicle a contender for Top Pick status.
