Second-generation Nissan LEAF owners in Europe are facing a technological headache. As telecom providers phase out 3G networks, the mobile app that allows remote access to vehicle functions will stop working. In France, users have already received notifications that support will end on March 30, 2026.

This affects models produced from 2018 to 2025. Once 3G is switched off, owners will no longer be able to remotely start the climate control, manage charging, or perform other operations via smartphone. The cars themselves will continue to run, and basic settings will remain accessible through the multimedia system.

The issue stems not from Nissan's software policy, but from infrastructure changes by mobile operators. The older 2G/3G modules installed in these vehicles cannot be upgraded to 4G or 5G without costly hardware replacement.

This situation could impact the resale value of LEAFs on the used market, especially in countries where 3G shutdowns are already underway. In Spain, for example, the phase-out is expected around late 2027. More broadly, the problem will also affect other models from various brands that rely on outdated telematics modules, raising questions about long-term digital support for vehicles.
