General Motors has filed a patent for an airbag system mounted in the vehicle roof. The application, numbered US 12,534,038 B2, was submitted in May 2024 and published on January 27, 2026. Michigan engineers Chin-hsu Lin and Kyu Song are listed among the inventors.

The system involves placing a gas generator within the roof structure. The airbag is stored above the cabin and deploys downward when activated. Unlike traditional designs, it is not integrated into the steering wheel or dashboard.

This design features a main inflatable element and two guide tubes connecting it to the gas generator. Upon activation, gas fills the airbag, creating a protective volume for the passenger's upper body while providing stabilization relative to the lower torso.

The description also includes one-way valves and vent holes to control pressure and allow gradual gas release after deployment. Various shapes and additional tethers can be used to manage inflation geometry.

This development could be valuable for vehicles with unconventional cabin layouts, including autonomous models where passengers may be oriented differently relative to the direction of travel. Such technologies might appear in new 2026 vehicles, particularly in segments with advanced automation features.
