Audi has officially confirmed that it has stopped taking orders for its flagship A8 sedan in Germany. The final configurations were available until February 18, 2026.

While the exact end of production hasn't been announced, the model's removal from the German configurator signals the imminent end of the D5 generation, which has been in production since 2017. The 2021 refresh didn't significantly boost the A8's position against rivals like the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

Audi stated that further details about a possible successor will be revealed later. However, the word 'possible' underscores that no final decision has been made. According to German media, the company is evaluating a platform for a potential new model, but another refresh has been ruled out due to stricter environmental regulations, including the upcoming Euro 7 standard.

The large sedan segment is declining as SUVs and luxury minivans gain popularity, especially in Asia. Even if Audi approves a new generation, a multi-year gap between models could give competitors an edge.

In practice, the end of A8 orders in Germany reflects a broader shift in the premium market. Audi previously planned a full switch to electric vehicles by 2032 but adjusted its strategy due to slowing EV demand. Theoretically, a new A8 generation could use the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) designed for larger models. Overall, the economic viability of investing in a traditional flagship sedan in an SUV-dominated landscape remains uncertain.
