Ford has set a new Nürburgring record — one Chevrolet won’t be taking anytime soon. The Transit SuperVan 4.2, an all-electric monster van, clocked a lap of 6:48.393 around the 12.9-mile Nordschleife, making it the fastest van ever to conquer the Green Hell. Behind the wheel was Romain Dumas, who also piloted the Volkswagen ID.R to its record-setting run in 2019.

The SuperVan story dates back to 1971, evolving through radical concepts including a Formula 1—engined version in 1993. The latest iteration, the 4.2, builds on the 2,000-hp SuperVan 4 revealed in 2022, with less weight, refined aerodynamics, and slightly reduced power for better efficiency. From my perspective, it’s less about production relevance and more about Ford showing how its EV technology can push boundaries before filtering into road cars.

The SuperVan has already broken records at Pikes Peak and Bathurst, and now its Nürburgring lap adds another chapter. For once, Chevy can’t compete: it has no van-based contender. The real question is when Ford will chase back the Mustang GTD’s lost supercar crown.
