Stellantis has announced a major recall affecting several of its brands. According to KBA data, about 80,000 vehicles in Germany are involved, with up to 700,000 worldwide.

The issue stems from a design gap between the gasoline particulate filter and the generator. Under certain conditions, especially in wet environments, these components may come into contact. This can allow moisture to enter, potentially causing electrical arcing and overheating. In the worst-case scenario, there's a risk of fire in the engine compartment.

The recall covers a broad range of Stellantis brands: Peugeot, Citroën, DS, Opel, Fiat, Jeep, and Alfa Romeo. The affected models are from the 2023–2026 model years. Owners have already started receiving notifications to schedule service appointments. The fix takes about 30 minutes and is performed free of charge.

Recalls like this are becoming increasingly common in the industry. The growing complexity of modern cars, particularly with environmental systems, raises the likelihood of such engineering risks. For automakers, these recalls represent not just a reputational concern but a financial one as well.

This case highlights how global platforms amplify the impact of a "mass defect." Where a problem might once have affected a single model, today it can automatically scale across dozens of markets and brands.

A similar situation occurred with Toyota regarding fuel pumps and with Hyundai concerning batteries: shared architecture speeds up development but dramatically increases the cost of an error.
