Renault is continuing to explore the space where design meets art. This time, the brand has turned its Twingo E-Tech Electric city EV into a full-scale art object built around an optical-illusion effect.

What this project is

The project was created with American artist Joshua Vides, known for his signature “drawing in real life” style. The car wears black-and-white graphics with crisp outlines, making it look like a 2D sketch brought into the three-dimensional world.

The work was produced live during Renault Carwalk in Paris, where visitors were able to watch the car’s transformation unfold step by step.

Design highlights

The central idea is to emphasize the car’s shape through contour lines. The bodywork, wheel arches, lighting elements and even small details are picked out in black graphics, creating the effect of a “drawing brought to life”.

Technically, however, it remains a standard production Twingo E-Tech Electric — all of the changes are purely visual.

Renault’s strategy

The project forms part of the Renault Fund programme, through which the brand is developing its Art Car direction and working with contemporary artists. Since 2021, the company has actively used collaborations like this to reinterpret its models and strengthen the emotional connection with its audience.

The choice of the Twingo is no accident in that context — it is one of the brand’s most recognisable city cars, now adapted for the electric era.

Conclusion

Renault is showing that a car can be more than a means of transport; it can also become a cultural object. Projects like this do not alter the vehicle’s specifications, but they do shape the brand’s image and draw in a new audience, especially in the age of electric cars and visual content.
