The cheap Land Cruiser FJ stops being cheap very quickly

The Land Cruiser FJ starts at 4,500,100 yen in Japan, but Modellista, ARB and Toyota's own catalog push the price up to 7,154,890 yen — Land Cruiser 300 territory.

Toyota Land Cruiser FJ has launched in Japan with a price that looks almost friendly: from 4,500,100 yen — roughly $28,851, or 2.11 million rubles. But open the official accessory catalog, and the affordable off-roader stops being affordable in a hurry.

Toyota offers upgrades from three sources at once. Modellista handles the styling: a front bumper extension with integrated LED elements, hood trim, an illuminated grille, fender flares, side moldings, a roof spoiler and aluminum skid plates under the bumpers. Add 18-inch wheels in Matte Olive, interior accent lighting, door handle protectors, a sunshade, tinted windows and Pioneer speakers.

For buyers who want the FJ for substance rather than show, there is the ARB package. It includes a heavy-duty skid plate, side steps that double as rock sliders, and a roof rack. This is already closer to real off-road use than to parking-lot posing.

Toyota itself adds the Playful Set: topographical decals on the hood, doors and spare wheel cover, plus Molle panels on the rear door and in the cargo area. There is also the usual practical bits: floor mats, covers, sill protectors, mudguards, deflectors, dash cams, cargo opening protection. Anti-theft options are more modest — wheel locks and a steering wheel lock — even though the Land Cruiser has long been one of the favorite targets for car thieves in Japan.

The prices quickly explain the main risk. The full Modellista package costs 965,800 yen — about $6,192. ARB adds 591,800 yen, or roughly $3,794. The Playful Set comes in at 169,400 yen — around $1,086. Tick every box in the catalog and the final price of the Land Cruiser FJ climbs to 7,154,890 yen — roughly $45,872. And this is where the awkward comparison begins: the buyer is no longer looking at a compact FJ but at a number that puts the bigger Land Cruiser 300 squarely on the table. Toyota gave people a cheap point of entry, but the most tempting FJ turned out to be a very different car from the one shown in the base price list.
