When carmakers chase a reaction instead of beauty

Modern car design increasingly plays for reaction rather than beauty. We’ve gathered the most controversial premieres of recent years, and topping the list is the Ferrari Luce — a five-seat electric Ferrari with a starting price of around $650,000.

The Luce is divisive for more than just its looks. It marks Ferrari’s first foray into full EVs, yet the car barely resembles anything Maranello has built before. There’s no V12, none of the classic supercar proportions — instead, the project showcases the brand’s technological reach and helps cut its fleet emissions. For some it’s a bold step; for others, a way of proving to regulators that Ferrari buyers simply don’t want electric cars.

Jaguar tells a similar story: the Type 00 concept evolved into the production Type 01, and the brand has dropped combustion entirely in favour of expensive electric models. The risk is huge: competing with Bentley is far harder than simply raising prices. The Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door EV draws criticism for its odd styling and the loss of the V8, even though its 1,153 hp make it a genuine showcase of AMG technology.

The Dodge Charger Daytona looks dramatic, but fans haven’t forgiven the brand for replacing the Hellcat era with an EV. And the Tesla Cybertruck is still picking fights with the entire market through its body alone: fast, high-tech, but too expensive, too polarising, and no longer as practical as promised.

The takeaway is simple: carmakers are trying to stand out at any cost. Sometimes the result is a future icon, sometimes — an expensive experiment that, years from now, will leave people wondering who on earth signed off on it.
