Jaguar bets the brand: a £100,000 electric GT to relaunch a name

Jaguar Type 01 already has the only date that matters — the day of its big exam. The production electric GT will be unveiled in September 2026, and this isn’t just another premiere for the marque: Jaguar has effectively wound down its previous model range to come back as an expensive electric brand.

Type 01 is the production follow-up to the divisive Type 00 concept. The format shifts to something more practical: instead of a two-door show coupe — a large four-door grand tourer over five metres long. The name is symbolic too: Jaguar itself explains that the “0” stands for electric drive and zero emissions, while the “1” — is the first car of a new era. The car is being designed, engineered and built in the United Kingdom.

Technically, Jaguar is aiming higher than the Tesla Model S as a mass-market EV. Expect three electric motors, more than 1000 hp, around 1300 Nm, a battery of roughly 120 kWh, an 800-volt architecture, charging at about 350 kW and a range of up to 770 km WLTP. The price confirms the change of league: more than £100,000, or roughly $134,000. That’s already the territory of the Porsche Taycan Turbo, Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door EV, Lucid Air Sapphire, Bentley and the pricier BMW i7 trims.

The risk is enormous. Jaguar used to sell the XE, XF, F-Pace, E-Pace and F-Type to different kinds of buyer; now the brand wants to speak almost exclusively to wealthy customers who want not just a car but an object with design, status and a story. But electric luxury is a tough segment: Porsche is stronger on sport, Mercedes — on comfort, Lucid — on range, and Chinese premium EVs are quickly catching up on power, screens and autonomous features.

September’s premiere will show whether Jaguar still has any credit of trust after the most radical relaunch in its history.
