Nio Hamburg closure 2026: date, reasons and what happens to German showrooms

Nio will close its brand center in Hamburg on July 20, 2026. The company cited a review of its European business and a difficult car market. Its other German locations remain open for now.

Nio House opened near Jungfernstieg on June 21, 2024, as a showroom, café, and event space for owners to meet. That makes it one of four major brand centers Nio built in Germany, and it lasted just over two years.

An additional factor was prolonged construction work right in front of the building. According to Nio, the work has hurt access to the site, safety, and the visitor experience, and it isn’t expected to wrap up for another five years. For a costly center in a prestigious part of the city, that made keeping the original format harder to justify.

The closure comes amid weak results for the brand. Only 15 new Nio vehicles were registered in Germany in the first half of 2026, down 87.6% year-on-year. Nio had already signaled a slowdown in its overseas expansion. At the same time, the automaker is cutting costs and weighing a shift from direct sales to a dealer network.

Nio says it isn’t leaving Germany. Sales and service support are set to continue through the centers in Berlin, Frankfurt, and Düsseldorf, as well as its partner network. The company hasn’t said whether the remaining Nio Houses will keep their current format long-term.
