Volvo EX50 2026: trademark filing, SPA3 platform and Košice plant explained

Volvo hasn’t registered a finished EX50 model — it has only filed a trademark application for the name. The filing reached the EUIPO on July 14, 2026 and is still under review. The mark is registered for cars and electric vehicles, but that doesn’t confirm either a production launch or a replacement for the current EX40.

The name makes sense on paper. The current EX40 originally launched as the XC40 Recharge and was renamed in 2024 without a generation change. A new index would let Volvo separate its next fully electric model from the CMA-platform crossover and slot it between the EX30 and the EX60.

The most likely technical basis is the SPA3 architecture. Its capabilities are already on display in the Volvo EX60 with an 800-volt system, offering up to 810 km of range and up to 680 hp. Those figures can’t be carried over to the EX50, but the shared platform could still bring faster charging, an integrated battery, and Volvo’s new in-house electric motors.

Another clue ties back to the Košice plant. Volvo has officially stated that the factory’s first car will be an as-yet-unnamed next-generation model, with Polestar 7 following in 2028. The latter will share a technical base with two upcoming Volvo models, including the EX60. SPEEDME previously reported on the delayed launch of the Slovak plant, now pushed to 2027.

On September 17, Volvo will hold a strategic presentation and unveil the largest product plan in its history. The company has also promised to reveal two new models after summer, so the EX50 could turn out to be one of the autumn announcements. That’s still speculation: Volvo hasn’t linked the filing to any specific premiere.

Until the body, dimensions, and specs are revealed, it’s more accurate to treat the EX50 as a possible name for the EX40’s successor rather than a confirmed production model.
