Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 2028: facelift design, engine and release timing

The Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 Monogram Series has been spotted testing again — this time the prototype has shed nearly all of its camouflage. The main exterior changes are concentrated up front: the grille has a slightly reshaped outline, and the headlights now feature large LED-lit stars. The bumpers, the retractable spoiler, the taillights and the decorative exhaust tips all look unchanged.

The facelift is likely to be mostly software-driven. Motor.es expects an updated infotainment system, refreshed driver-assistance features and chassis tuning geared toward comfort — a shift toward comfort we already covered. There's talk of a move to the MB.OS software platform, though Mercedes has yet to officially detail the equipment of the updated roadster.

The current SL 680 is powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 producing 585 hp and 800 Nm of torque. The US-spec car sprints to 60 mph in 4 seconds. According to early information, peak output won't increase after the facelift, though the engine could be adapted to meet Euro 7 rules and gain a 48-volt system.

The source expects the updated Maybach SL to premiere in mid-2027, after which the car will arrive as a 2028 model. So far only prototype testing has been confirmed: exact specs, pricing and the sales start date have not been announced by the manufacturer.
