Next-generation Toyota Corolla: design leak and powertrain plans

A blurry frame from an NHK documentary has become the first hint of the next-generation production Toyota Corolla, though it doesn’t quite qualify as a full leak. The program captured a closed-door project presentation: on screen is an elongated sedan with a low roofline, while Toyota deliberately kept the bodywork details hidden. The project itself and its new platform have already been approved by company leadership.

SPEEDME journalists noticed the car’s resemblance to the Corolla Concept, unveiled in October 2025. On the screen you can make out a sharp front end, a descending front side-window line and a roof that tapers toward the rear almost like a fastback. However, the frame’s quality doesn’t allow anyone to say for certain that all these design cues will reach production.

Official photos of the concept for the future Toyota Corolla indeed showed a four-door car with a short hood, a raked glasshouse and an unusually elongated cabin. Toyota unveiled it at the Japan Mobility Show on October 29, 2025, but didn’t reveal a launch date or production-spec details at the time.

Far more important than the styling is the technical side of the project. The NHK film mentions parallel development of an architecture designed for gasoline engines, hybrid systems and fully electric versions. Such unification is meant to shorten development timelines and let Toyota adjust the powertrain lineup depending on the country and local demand.

SPEEDME has previously covered in detail why Toyota is preparing several types of powertrains for the Corolla. That said, the final lineup hasn’t been announced yet: there’s no confirmed data on power output, batteries, range, transmissions or drivetrain layout.

A new GR Corolla based on the next generation also remains unconfirmed. Toyota unveiled the extreme GRMN Corolla in June 2026, but that belongs to the current family and doesn’t prove a performance version of the future model is in the works.

The hatchback and wagon body styles, the global launch timing, pricing and target markets all remain unknown. The documentary frame only shows the direction of development, not a finished car: the next Corolla may end up close to the concept, but Toyota hasn’t officially confirmed that yet.
