Mitsubishi has officially confirmed the return of the Pajero and set a world premiere for autumn 2026. Japanese magazine BestCar, citing dealer sources, names a more precise date — September 2. The automaker itself has not confirmed that day yet, so it’s best treated as a provisional date rather than a final one. The comeback arrives five years after the model was discontinued in most overseas markets.

The expected price in Japan is between 5 and 7 million yen. For comparison, the current Toyota Land Cruiser 250 starts at 5.7 million yen in Japan, so the Pajero could genuinely land in the same price bracket.

Japanese media expect the new SUV to be built using technology from the Triton pickup, including its ladder frame. Mitsubishi hasn’t confirmed that link yet, but it looks logical: for the current Triton, the company developed a new frame, chassis and diesel engine specifically for heavy-duty use. an interior leak from the Star Camp 2026 preview has already given an early look at the cabin.

The Pajero’s main engine is expected to be the 2.4-litre 4N16 diesel with a twin-turbo setup. In the Triton, it produces 150 kW, or 204 metric horsepower, and 470 Nm of torque. Engine tuning on the Pajero may differ, since official specifications for the SUV haven’t been released yet.

A ladder-frame construction and a high-torque diesel are well suited to towing and rough roads, but on their own they don’t guarantee the capability of the previous-generation Pajero. The type of four-wheel-drive system, the presence of a low-range transfer case, ground clearance, wading depth and body geometry are all still unknown. Those figures will show whether the newcomer becomes a true off-roader or a more comfort-oriented ladder-frame model built mainly for tarmac and light off-roading.

An electrified version is also being discussed, though a setup based on the Outlander PHEV remains speculation from outside outlets. Mitsubishi hasn’t disclosed a hybrid powertrain or a timeline for one. Ahead of the reveal, only the Pajero name, its status as an all-new model and an autumn 2026 debut are confirmed.
