Cheapest used electric cars in Germany 2026: prices, battery health and recalls

AUTO BILD lists seven used electric cars from €11,000 to €20,000, from the VW e-Golf to the Ford Mustang Mach-E. Battery health, open recalls and the weak points of each model.

Used electric cars in Germany have slipped to €11,000–20,000. AUTO BILD looked at seven models: the e-Golf, Kona Electric, Mokka-e, e-C4 X, ID.3, I-Pace and Mustang Mach-E.

The Volkswagen e-Golf in the selection starts at €11,000, the Jaguar I-Pace at €19,000 and the Ford Mustang Mach-E at around €20,000. The source did not disclose mileage, model years or the number of listings checked, so these figures mark the lower end of the selection rather than a guaranteed market minimum.

The cheapest of the group is the Volkswagen e-Golf, from €11,000. The model won the compact class in the TÜV Report 2025, while the 2026 edition is led by the BMW 1 and 2 Series. On an e-Golf, check the remaining battery capacity, fast-charging performance, brakes, springs and dampers. Pre-facelift versions have a smaller battery and noticeably less range.

The Opel Mokka-e is priced from €16,000. Cars from 2022 and 2023 need a VIN check: a software fault in the battery control unit could cause starting problems and a loss of drive while the car was moving. Proof that the update has been installed matters more here than a small difference in price.

The Hyundai Kona Electric starts at €16,500. The version with the 64 kWh battery remains one of the longest-legged options in this price bracket, but on first-generation cars every high-voltage battery campaign has to be checked. The 2026 recall covers 3478 cars in Australia and 13,523 in Germany, so the status is established by VIN and by the country of first registration.

The Citroën e-C4 X and the Volkswagen ID.3 both start at €17,500 in the selection. On the Citroën, check the battery control unit software and whether the recall work has been carried out: an incorrect configuration could lead to a loss of drive. The model is relatively young, so a low price on a particular car calls for a separate look at its origin and service history.

On early ID.3s the main complaints concern software, infotainment, touch controls and individual electrical components. The battery itself is not necessarily the weak point: the ADAC long-term test ID.3 has covered more than 220,000 km with its battery and drivetrain still working. On a used car, check the software version, the 12-volt battery, the charging flap actuator and how evenly the tyres have worn.

The Jaguar I-Pace at €19,000 looks like the most spectacular discount. It is also the most complex car of the seven. In 2026 campaigns continue in individual markets over possible high-voltage battery overheating; the interim measure caps the charge at 90% and requires the car to be parked away from buildings. Before any deal, check the VIN, the market the car came from and whether a permanent remedy exists for that specific vehicle. We took a detailed look at the I-Pace recall and the temporary charging cap earlier.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E rounds off the selection at around €20,000. On 2021 and 2022 cars with the extended-range battery, check that the high-voltage battery junction box has been replaced: overheating contactors could cause a sudden loss of drive. On an imported car, access to updates, the fast-charging history and the ability to service US or European specification matter as well.

A broader benchmark comes from the study by TÜV Nord and Carly, based on around 50,000 measurements. The median SoH came to 96 points, while 9.9% of the cars examined were below 85. Past 90,000 km the average rate of degradation increased, but that does not mean every battery automatically deteriorates at that mileage.

The range figure on the dashboard is no substitute for diagnostics. It is worth checking the SoH, the charging speed and the way the battery behaves under load. An independent report then has to be set against mileage, age, warranty terms, update history and completed recall campaigns.

Of the seven, the e-Golf looks like the simplest city option, the Kona the most versatile on range, and the ID.3 a strong compromise between age and practicality. The I-Pace and the Mustang Mach-E only make sense after checking the VIN and the high-voltage side: a low price for a former premium EV does not reduce the cost of a complex repair.
