Toyota has announced a recall of nearly 6,000 four-wheel-drive Tacoma pickups over a potentially dangerous flaw in the front propeller shaft. The issue affects both gasoline models and 2025 Tacoma i-FORCE MAX hybrids. Toyota Motor North America says the fault stems from an incorrect material used by supplier GKN Driveline in the CV joint’s bearing assembly—a supplier-side misstep in a critical component that leaves no margin for error.

The defective part can deform and crack, which may restrict steering or even lead to a loss of control. Customer complaints began arriving in February 2025, and subsequent analysis pointed to cracks and wear in the ball cage of the joint. In all, there have been 69 warranty claims and five field reports, with no crashes linked to the defect. The risk is clear enough: when steering could be compromised, caution quickly becomes priority one.

The recall covers about 3,500 gasoline and 2,400 hybrid Tacomas, some of which haven’t been sold yet. Owners will be notified by November 30 and can have one or both driveshafts replaced free of charge—a straightforward fix, and the right move when safety hinges on a single component.
