Chinese platforms and technology in Volvo, MINI, Mazda, Opel and smart cars

Volvo, MINI, Mazda, JLR, KGM, Opel and smart show four different ways Chinese engineering now sits behind familiar global badges.

A badge on the hood says less and less about where a car really comes from. SPEEDME has looked at Volvo, MINI, Mazda, Opel, smart and other brands with a notable Chinese technical component. The cases fall into different groups: in some, there is a genuinely Chinese architecture; in others, a jointly developed platform; and several high-profile examples still do not amount to a transfer of a ready-made platform.

The link is direct with the Volvo XC40 and Polestar 2, although calling CMA simply a Geely platform is inaccurate. Volvo Cars says the Compact Modular Architecture was jointly developed by Volvo and Geely. It first underpinned the XC40, followed by the Polestar 2 and models from Lynk & Co.

The electric MINI Cooper and Aceman follow a different model. BMW Group and Great Wall Motor created the 50:50 Spotlight Automotive joint venture specifically to develop and build electric cars together. The Aceman is produced in Zhangjiagang, including its electric powertrain and high-voltage battery. So this is not simply a MINI placed on a ready-made GWM platform. The Aceman has also been examined by SPEEDME in terms of its hardware and real-world driving range.

Mazda describes the Chinese contribution even more clearly. The company says the Mazda6e was developed together with Changan: the Chinese partner supplied electrification and smart-cabin technologies, while Mazda was responsible for design, build quality and its characteristic driving feel. In Mazda's corporate reporting, Changan's electrification and software technologies are described as the technical foundation of the project.

JLR and KGM have gone further. The new Freelander is based on an electrified Chery architecture, something JLR itself confirms in its annual report. SPEEDME has already taken a detailed look at the Freelander 8, its Chery-JLR technology and Chinese pricing. KGM, meanwhile, signed a separate platform licensing agreement with Chery for future midsize and large SUVs — a case that is explicitly about licensing a Chinese architecture.

Stellantis is considering production of a new electric Opel C-SUV in Zaragoza alongside the Leapmotor B10 and has confirmed the use of components from the Leapmotor International ecosystem. But there is still no official statement that Opel will receive the B10 platform itself.

Even the smart #2 cannot automatically be described as a car on a Geely platform. smart operates as a Mercedes-Benz and Geely joint venture, yet the manufacturer calls ECA its own new architecture, developed by the brand's international engineering teams.

That leaves at least four distinct levels of cooperation: a licensed Chinese platform, a jointly developed architecture, technology created within a joint venture and individual Chinese components. For a modern car, that is far more precise than dividing everything into European and Chinese — the same badge can now conceal very different engineering roots.
