Future Audi A8 may move closer to Porsche Panamera architecture

Porsche has confirmed production talks with Audi. German media say a future A8 could use Leipzig and a Panamera-related architecture, but no final decision has been made.

The Audi A8 could return with a fundamentally different technical basis. A Porsche representative has confirmed that the company is discussing possible production scenarios for the next generation of Audi's flagship sedan. German media report that one option under consideration is Porsche's Leipzig plant and an architecture shared with, or related to, the future Panamera. The model has been linked to a launch around 2030, but no final decision on the production site has been made.

The current Audi A8 D5 is nearing the end of its life cycle. Since February 18, 2026, Audi has stopped accepting individual orders for the model in Germany, while production in Neckarsulm is expected to end in the second half of the year. Ending factory orders in its home market did not mean the A8 disappeared from sale immediately: availability of stock cars depends on inventory and the individual market.

According to Mitteldeutsche Zeitung, a Porsche representative confirmed that the company is in close contact with Audi and is evaluating possible production scenarios for the A8, but declined to discuss planning details. Porsche's Leipzig plant already builds the Panamera and Macan and can handle vehicles with different types of powertrains. However, production of the next A8 in Leipzig has not been officially approved.

The architecture is another key question. The current A8 is based on MLB evo, while the Panamera is associated with the rear-wheel-drive-oriented MSB architecture. German media say the next A8 is expected to use a technical basis shared with, or related to, the future Panamera. If that scenario goes ahead, the flagship Audi could receive a substantially different layout and chassis setup. Specific drivetrain and component decisions have not yet been disclosed.

The successor itself is no longer just a rumor. In March, Audi CEO Gernot Döllner confirmed that the company is working on the next A8 and plans to use internal-combustion engines and plug-in hybrid powertrains. A previously considered fully electric scenario for the new flagship generation was revised.

For future buyers, a common technical basis with Porsche would not mean that the A8 gets the same engines, suspension or calibration as the Panamera. The production configuration, specifications, trim levels and service implications of the next-generation Audi have not yet been revealed.

Audi still has to settle the production site and launch schedule. Current reports suggest the new A8 could arrive around 2030. If that timing holds, several years would separate the end of D5 production in 2026 from the arrival of its successor.
