Audi has announced a recall of 18,652 plug-in hybrids across the A8, Q7, and Q8 lines built between August 2019 and July 2024. The move stems from a risk that battery cells could overheat during charging, which in isolated cases may lead to a fire.

The company says there have been no reported fires or injuries, but is acting out of caution. Until the update is installed, Audi advises owners to keep an eye on charging, avoid overheating the equipment, and, where possible, leave the car parked in open areas. Such guidance is hardly reassuring for PHEV drivers, yet it reads as a sensible interim step.

The remedy will arrive as a software update for the battery management system. It is designed to tighten thermal monitoring and cap the charge level to reduce the chance of overheating. A software fix is the least intrusive route and, if rolled out swiftly, should minimize disruption.

The campaign covers the 60 TFSI e variants of the A8 and Q7, as well as the hybrid Q8. Audi says owners will be notified when it is time to visit a service center. Despite the short-term inconvenience, the brand maintains its hybrids remain among the leaders in their class for technology and safety.
