New Mitsubishi Pajero 2026: design philosophy, platform and premiere date

Design director Norihiko Yoshimine explains how the new Mitsubishi Pajero keeps its off-road heritage while riding on the Triton platform ahead of its September 2 debut.

For Norihiko Yoshimine, the end of Pajero sales in Japan back in 2019 was never just another corporate headline. It was this very SUV that pushed him to become a car designer in the first place. Now Yoshimine leads the design of an entirely new generation.

In an official Mitsubishi interview, he explained that the team started by studying why the Pajero became so popular around the world. They wanted to build a modern vehicle that would feel new at first glance, yet be instantly recognizable as a Pajero. Inside the project, this approach was framed around two ideas — heritage and evolution.

Straight copying of old design cues was ruled out. Instead, the new Pajero keeps the horizontal lines, visual solidity and proportions of a proper four-wheel-drive vehicle that defined earlier generations. The cabin, too, is meant to blend that familiar character with trim quality and technology befitting Mitsubishi’s new flagship status.

The technical foundation is no longer a rumor. The official teaser site confirms a ladder frame, the S-AWC all-wheel-drive system, and a digital successor to the brand’s signature three-pod Multi Meter. The body and both suspensions are being developed specifically for the Pajero, even though the Triton pickup platform serves as its base.

The move fits into Mitsubishi’s plan for 13 new models, with the Pajero cast as the flagship and the foundation of a future off-road lineup. Across four generations, the company has sold more than 3.25 million Pajeros in over 170 countries and regions.

There’s one important clarification. Sales ended in Japan in 2019, while the Pajero left global markets for good in 2021. That’s why Mitsubishi officially calls this comeback its first in five years.

The world premiere is set for September 2. Engines, dimensions, trim levels and pricing, however, remain unrevealed for now. Reports of a hybrid and smaller family models should be treated as preliminary until the official announcement.
