Gymkhana is back — and this time the star isn’t a supercar but a bona fide retro bruiser. At SEMA 2025, Subaru and the Hoonigan crew unveiled the Brataroo 9500 Turbo — a 670-hp take on the iconic 1978 Subaru BRAT pickup, built specifically for Travis Pastrana’s new film. They started with a classic, yet what remains from the original is essentially the body’s outline. Lightweight carbon panels, flared arches, and active aerodynamics turn the Brataroo into the most extreme Subaru project to date. Under the hood sits a 2.0-liter turbo boxer developed by Vermont SportsCar to spin to 9,500 rpm and deliver 680 Nm. A SADEV sequential gearbox and all-wheel drive let it rocket off the line and drift with rally-bred precision. The spec sheet reads more like a stunt blueprint than a museum restoration. The look comes from designer Khyzyl Saleem, known for cyberpunk-tinged fantasy renders. The livery nods to Australia, where the Aussie Shred shoot will take place: sun motifs, a kangaroo, and classic ’70s Subaru graphics. It’s a playful mix that telegraphs the car’s intent at a glance.Pastrana says he considers this BRAT the wildest Gymkhana car yet. The claim tracks: the build is designed to leap, pour smoke, and survive the landing. The film is set to premiere in December on Hoonigan’s YouTube channel; for now, the Brataroo is on display at SEMA — a chance to take in how drifting, speed, and showmanship keep evolving.
