Consumer Reports has published a fresh reliability ranking of crossovers based on feedback from 300,000 owners. The outcome defied expectations: hybrid versions consistently proved more dependable than gasoline-only models, and Subaru claimed the overall lead for the first time.

Rounding out the top five is the Lexus RX in its PHEV version — the most reliable iteration of the model. The plug-in hybrid confidently outpaced the gasoline RX and offers up to 56 km of electric-only range, though the high price remains a barrier for many buyers.

One rung above sits the BMW X5. It edged past Lexus — a rarity in Consumer Reports rankings. The base B58 inline-six earned the model strong marks, yet the associated costs, including the risk of expensive repairs, are notably above average.

Third place goes to the Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid. The most powerful and longest-range RAV4 shows one of the brand’s best reliability results, delivering 67 km in EV mode and up to 970 km of total range.

The runner-up is the Subaru Forester. The model has long maintained a reputation as a dependable family crossover, and the 2025 generation reinforced that consistency: improved engines and the brand’s familiar focus on safety earned it high scores.

At the very top is the new Subaru Forester Hybrid. Despite its fresh design, it outpaced the field thanks to a refined 2.5-liter engine paired with two electric motors and strong efficiency. With two Foresters in the top tier, Subaru climbed to number one among all brands for reliability.
