Shopping for an affordable three-row SUV? We compare prices and value across Hyundai Palisade, VW Atlas, Kia Telluride, Sorento, and Mitsubishi Outlander.

Three-row SUVs have long become the anti-minivan for shoppers who need six to eight seats but prefer the crossover look. Even amid record U.S. prices, a few models still hold the line with starting figures around $40,000–$41,000. There is a trade-off, though: in most budget-leaning choices, the third row remains a compromise, best for kids or short stints.

At the top of the “affordable” bracket sit the priciest of the accessible picks. The new-generation Hyundai Palisade opens at $41,035, with the hybrid notably above the base V6. Just below are the Volkswagen Atlas from $40,785 and the Mazda CX-90 from $40,330, both leaning into more grown-up hardware, including an inline-six with mild-hybrid tech. The Ford Explorer hovers near $40,160, while the Jeep Grand Cherokee L is listed at the outgoing model’s price as the refreshed version still awaits final stickers. This is the tier you choose when refinement and features matter more than squeezing every last dollar.

The middle of the pack is where rational choices live: the Kia Telluride ($37,885) and Nissan Pathfinder ($37,790) offer a lot of family-minded utility for the money, while the Hyundai Santa Fe ($36,400) fits a third row into a smaller footprint—essentially three rows at a two-row price. In everyday use, this is the sweet spot many households will find easiest to justify.

The real intrigue lies with the value leaders. The Kia Sorento starts at $33,635 and remains one of the shrewdest ways to get seven seats and a modern infotainment setup. First place goes to the Mitsubishi Outlander: from $31,140 for the base version, with respectable equipment and the option of S-AWC all-wheel drive. For budget-focused buyers, these two make a particularly persuasive case.

If the third row is more of an occasional-use backup, these models come across as the most straightforward compromise between price and practicality.
