Hyundai patents modular, removable doors for pickups and SUVs: separate frame, exterior and interior modules allow repairs, personalization, open-air driving.

Hyundai has filed a U.S. patent application that hints at a fresh direction for the brand’s pickup and SUV design. The documents describe removable, modular doors engineered for flexibility, personalization, and an active lifestyle rather than pure utility.

Each door is made up of three separate elements. A structural frame module, mounted on hinges, carries the load for rigidity and safety. An exterior skin module shapes the door’s appearance, while the interior module handles the cabin finish. This layout lets owners remove or swap individual pieces without taking off the entire door.

Patent illustrations depict a pickup with a boxy, tough-edged body and the option to drive without doors. The look immediately calls to mind the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler, where open-air architecture is part of the ethos. Hyundai’s modular approach reads as a more technical twist on that idea and could make repairs and personalization notably easier.

The positioning is just as clear: the patent targets a lifestyle audience—off-road fans, travelers, and outdoor-focused drivers. The ability to quickly tailor a vehicle for different scenarios, from city streets to a weekend of camping, aligns neatly with market trends anticipated for 2025–2026.
