Elon Musk's The Boring Company is exploring the possibility of building a tunnel system to connect Reno with the Tesla Gigafactory Nevada. This information comes from Fortune, which cites documents obtained from public sources.

According to foreign media reports, in October the company received $50,000 to prepare conceptual designs and a feasibility report for a tunnel beneath a roughly 9-mile (approximately 14.5 km) stretch of highway leading to the Gigafactory Nevada. The funding was provided by the Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada (EDAWN), an organization that partners with the state on business attraction and development.

The initiative is seen as one potential solution to traffic congestion and accident issues on Interstate 80, which serves the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center. This industrial park hosts major employers like Tesla and Panasonic.

For context, Tesla and Panasonic have also supported a separate study into launching commuter rail service using an existing freight rail line along the highway. Details of the possible tunnel project, including cost and transport format, remain undisclosed.
