Ford has officially confirmed plans to introduce a new passenger car priced under $40,000 to the American market. The model is expected to arrive by the end of this decade as part of a broader program to refresh and lower the cost of its lineup. The announcement came during a Ford dealer meeting at the NADA Show in Las Vegas. The company stated it will launch five models under $40,000 in the U.S. market within this decade. The lineup will include a passenger car, a pickup truck, an SUV, and a van, all with new names and not based on existing vehicles.According to Andrew Frick, president of Ford Blue and Model e divisions, all new models will use so-called multi-energy powertrains. This refers to a combination of gasoline engines, hybrid systems, and fully electric versions. The first in this program will be a mid-size electric pickup truck planned for release in 2027. Details about the new passenger car have not yet been disclosed. The return of a passenger car holds symbolic importance for Ford. After discontinuing the Fusion in 2020, and earlier the Taurus, Focus, and Fiesta, the Mustang remained the brand's only passenger car in the U.S. CEO Jim Farley previously explained the move away from sedans by citing their low profitability, despite their popularity with buyers.Against the backdrop of the average new car price in the U.S. reaching a record $50,326 in December, Ford hopes this new strategy will fill the niche for affordable vehicles and partially win back customers not focused on crossovers and pickups.
