The premium brand Denza, part of the BYD group, has unveiled an updated version of its flagship GT wagon, the Z9GT, in China. This launch comes as European rivals like the Audi RS 5 PHEV and BMW M5 Touring prepare their own entries, and it showcases a significant boost in performance over the previously shown model. The key update is in the powertrain for the fully electric version. Its three-motor setup now produces 850 kW, equivalent to 1,155 horsepower. That’s roughly 188 hp more than before. Top speed reaches 270 km/h, putting the Denza Z9GT among the world’s fastest production wagons. Despite this, the car remains hefty—even the single-motor variant weighs around 2,700 kg.The lineup still includes a rear-wheel-drive version with a single 370 kW electric motor, capable of hitting 240 km/h. There’s also a plug-in hybrid Super DM variant, where electric motors with a combined 640 kW work alongside a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine. For the PHEV, battery capacity has been increased to 63.82 kWh, allowing for about 400 km of all-electric range under the CLTC cycle.Visually, the Denza Z9GT remains largely unchanged. Its dimensions are 5,195 mm long, 1,990 mm wide, and 1,490 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 3,125 mm. The most noticeable visual tweak is the new placement of the LiDAR sensor, now centered on the roof above the windshield.Rounding out the look are a new Fjord green paint option and a blue indicator light that signals when driver-assistance systems are active. This update to the Z9GT highlights BYD’s strategy of focusing on powerful, tech-laden models that can compete directly with German premium brands not just on features, but on performance too. With its 1,155-hp version, the Denza Z9GT shows how quickly Chinese brands are closing the gap with traditional segment leaders. The design stays familiar, but the emphasis is squarely on hardware and technology. If versions like this reach Europe, German wagons will need to seriously rethink their positioning.
