Volvo continues to expand its electric lineup following the debut of the EX60, the first model on the new SPA3 platform. Upcoming launches are already confirmed: the refreshed EX40 and an all-new EV60 wagon. These models aim to strengthen the brand's position in the mid-premium segment, currently dominated by BMW and Mercedes.

The EX40, which launched in 2019 as the XC40 Recharge, is Volvo's oldest electric vehicle. It will now transition from the adapted CMA platform to the fully electric SPA3 architecture. This shift promises significant gains in range, faster charging speeds, and improved battery packaging. Production is expected to move from Ghent, Belgium, to Košice, Slovakia, where Polestar will build its Polestar 7—a close technical relative of the EX40.

The EV60 marks Volvo's first step toward reviving traditional wagons. The SPA3 platform enables low, aerodynamic body designs by eliminating internal combustion engine constraints. A forward-shifted crumple zone and optimized floor structure allow for reduced vehicle height without compromising second-row space.

Volvo's technical director, Anders Bell, notes that the platform offers flexibility for both tall and low body styles, as it lacks components tied to combustion engines. This opens the door to a broader model range, but beyond the EX40 and EV60, future plans remain less clear.

The brand's SUV segment is already well-covered: the EX30, EX40, EX60, and EX90 address key market tiers. The failure of the EM90 in China makes a new minivan unlikely. A logical next step could be the ES60 sedan, an EV60 counterpart designed to compete with the BMW i3 and Mercedes C-Class EQ.
