Stellantis is preparing to bring back the Jeep Cherokee in a hybrid version, with the new model potentially incorporating technology linked to Toyota. According to sources, the vehicle's powertrain uses components from BluE Nexus, a joint venture between Japanese suppliers Aisin and Denso.BluE Nexus specializes in electrified powertrains. A key element is the e-Axle, a compact unit that combines an electric motor, inverter, and transmission. Similar systems are already used in several Toyota and Lexus models, including the Mirai, UX, and C-HR.It is reported that the new Cherokee will utilize the hardware of the Toyota Hybrid System II, featuring the two-motor e-CVT electric transmission characteristic of the Japanese brand's hybrids. Stellantis has not officially confirmed BluE Nexus's involvement, but sources within the companies indicate collaboration. This shift to a new system aligns with a strategic change for the conglomerate. Stellantis previously discontinued several plug-in hybrids in North America and plans to focus on self-charging hybrids and extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs).In the future, similar technologies could appear on other models. For instance, the Jeep Grand Wagoneer will receive an EREV system using Bosch components, and analogous setups might be used on future Ram pickups. The Cherokee with its new hybrid architecture is set to become one of the notable new releases at auto shows in the coming years.
