China is accelerating its transition to electric trucks, a move that could radically reshape the transport sector. Industry estimates suggest heavy trucks in the country could eventually switch almost entirely to electric drive, cutting oil consumption in road transport by about 50%.

What is happening

The push was outlined by Sany Truck chief Liang Linghe, who said the heavy-haul segment has enough potential for large-scale electrification. Diesel trucks currently account for roughly half of all fuel consumed by China’s transport sector, so even a partial fleet transition would have a significant effect.

Why it makes sense

Cost savings are seen as the key driver. In freight transport, the cost of every kilometre matters, and electric vehicles can substantially lower operating expenses. That makes the shift not only an environmental move, but a commercially sound one as well.

Another advantage is lower emissions: one diesel truck produces emissions broadly comparable to around 100 passenger cars.

The challenges

Full electrification will require infrastructure growth, including a charging network for commercial trucks, higher battery energy density and lower vehicle costs. China, however, already has a strong industrial base and battery manufacturing capacity, which is helping to speed up the transition.

Market impact

If these plans are realised, it would mark one of the biggest shifts in global logistics. Lower oil consumption would affect the global energy market, while the freight sector itself would become cheaper and more technologically advanced.

China is turning electric trucks from an experiment into a strategic direction. In the coming years, this segment could become a key driver of change in the global transport system.
