Geely has unveiled its first robotaxi at the Beijing auto show, effectively joining the global race to develop autonomous transport. The project is a milestone for the brand, as the vehicle has been fully developed and produced in China.

As reported by Tarantas News, the new model takes the form of a futuristic compact van, with smooth body surfacing and distinctive lighting. The front end features a two-tier matrix light signature, while an illuminated line runs around the body, reinforcing the concept of a driverless vehicle.

Technically, Geely’s robotaxi is designed for Level 4 autonomy. That means the vehicle is capable of making decisions on its own in most traffic situations without driver input. Traditional controls remain in place, however, pointing to a transitional stage in the technology’s rollout.

At present, vehicles with this level of autonomy are not officially approved for use on public roads in China. Even so, the presentation itself shows how quickly such systems are being developed.

Geely’s move into the robotaxi segment underlines the intensifying competition in autonomous transport, where Chinese companies are increasingly challenging American and European developers, including Tesla-related projects.
