Rivian has begun testing Google Gemini, which will soon replace Amazon Alexa in the brand’s electric vehicles. The new AI will handle messaging, letting drivers have texts read aloud and reply by voice—a capability Rivian owners have been waiting on for years.Rivian’s infotainment system is built on the Android Open Source Project, incorporates elements of Android Automotive, and already runs Google apps such as YouTube and Maps. That partnership with Google is now widening: Gemini will become the native voice assistant, fully displacing Amazon’s solutions, including Alexa and AWS Cloud. The shift reads as a natural step given the software foundation and marks a clean break from Amazon’s stack.Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe had previously said the company did not plan to adopt Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, opting to focus on its own features. With Gemini onboard, the vehicles will be able to read, dictate, and send messages without a paired phone—keeping communication tools native to the car and consistent with Rivian’s approach to in-house functionality.
